The Spaniard left the Red Devils in the summer, following 12 years at Old Trafford.
United spent £43m on Inter MIlan goalkeeper Andre Onana to replace De Gea but the Cameroonian has made a mixed start to life at the club.
While Erik ten Hag will stick with Onana, United are set to be without the goalkeeper for up to a month in January as he will feature for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Altay Bayındır, who joined from Fenerbahce in a £4m deal in September, is yet to make his debut for the Red Devils.
The Sun say De Gea, who is currently in Manchester, is in talks with United over a return to the club to fill in for Onana.
De Gea alluded to his exit from United last summer when his contract was close to expiry by posting a ‘thinking face’ emoji on Twitter.
The Spaniard, who rarely posts anything but matchday pictures, was clearly referring to his future as it became apparent his time at United was over.
And De Gea has appeared to address the speculation again today with his Twitter [X] activity.
De Gea posted the ‘quizzical’ face, alluding to the reports about his return.
It remains to be seen whether the Spaniard could make a sensational return to the north-west but he remains without a club, despite being a free agent.
Ten Hag could be questioned about De Gea on Friday, when he faces the media before Sunday’s clash against Manchester City.
