NASHIK: Five of a Maharashtra family were feared dead on Tuesday when they jumped, one after the other, into an abandoned well to save a cat that got trapped there.
The tragedy occurred at Vakadi in Ahmednagar around 5pm, moments after the first of the family members entered the well and screamed for help. As one person followed the other into the depths of the well filled with dung and other waste, the scenario became grimmer.
A crowd of villagers mounted a rescue that led to one of those trapped inside the well getting pulled out alive. The survivor, identified as Vijay Manik Kale (35), was hospitalised.
Ahmednagar collector Siddharam Salimath said fire brigade personnel had been deployed to look for more survivors, if any.
Ambulances and medical teams were on standby, just in case the rescuers found signs of life.
An official said the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation deployed two suction pumps to remove the slurry.
